Dallas Magic Club February Meeting

Image
Had a fantastic time at the Dallas Magic Club meeting on Tuesday! As the Club's official photographer, I hosted a mini-lecture on making your magic look better, based on photographs that I have taken of other performers on stage over the years. The lecture went well, in spite of the fact that we had problems with the stage lights. Wouldn't you know that we'd have issues with the lights on the night that the photographer was scheduled to be on stage!

Dallas Magic Club Meeting January 2018

Image
Well, the new year is off to a great start at the Dallas Magic Club! We treated the guests to a professional close-up magic show with four Club members, including myself, who brought out their best performance pieces for the occasion. Judging from the expressions on people's faces, it looks like everyone had a great time. Thanks to Shawn Messioner, Geoff "Doc" Grimes, and Ian Richards, for their help in making the show a success. And, of course, a special thanks goes out to Club officer Dal Sanders for being my stand-in photographer for the evening. Great job everyone! See even more shots from the event on my Facebook page .

Dallas Magic Clubs Christmas Party

Image
Daryl Howard with Jeff Hallberg (aka Santa Clause) Daryl had a wonderful time at the Dallas Magic Club's annual Christmas party, hosted by Club members Dal and Cinde Sanders at their home. Our traditional "white rabbit" gift exchange went well, and we even had a surprise visit by none other than Jeff Hallberg, aka Santa Clause, who was in Dallas for the holidays, and stopped by to be a part of the festivities. We've just entered a whole new year. Where has the time gone? Can't wait to see what magical experiences 2018 will bring!

Dallas Magic Club Meeting October 2017

Image
I had a great time at the Dallas Magic Club meeting the other night. You will never guess who showed up as our special guest - Sean Wilson, the grand-daughter of Mark Wilson, one of my favorite mentors in magic, and the first professional magician that I ever shook hands with. (He is mentioned in my bio on my website.) We shared stories of our experiences with Mark and his wife/stage assistant Nani Darnell, and it reminded me of how much we all depend on inspiration from others in our goals in life. Dal Sanders, past national president of the Society of American Magicians, presented Sean with her membership certificate. Afterward, a small group of friends hung out at Vernon's Pub down the street to further our discussion of life and all things magical.

Dallas Magic Club Meeting September 2017

Image
Just had a great time at the Dallas Magic Club monthly meeting. We are back in our home at Theater 166, which is now Crossroads Theater, on Parker Road in Carrollton. Everyone was excited to be back in a real theater to enjoy the magic. Shown here are a few performers on stage, along with our usual group that meets at Vernon's Pub afterward. Dallas Magic Club Meeting August 2017

Image
Had a great time at this month's Dallas Magic Club meeting! We have been scheduling a series of mini-lectures for the Club on a variety of magic-related subjects, and this month it was my turn to present a mini-lecture entitled "Conquering Stage Fright", which was very well-received by all in attendance. Next month we will be enjoying another mini-lecture on performing for children by our own club members Dal and Cinde Sanders , who have their own weekly TV children's magic show. After the meeting, a few of us met at Vernon's Pub to share secrets of magic with each other. See more pictures from this wonderful night on Facebook .

Summer Splash Party 2017

Image
Just had a great time at this year's Summer Splash party. This is THE party for local professional entertainers and their families and friends. That's me on the far right, enjoying drinks with award-winning magician Trigg Watson , along with Caleb Westeen and friends. After dark, we were entertained by juggler Jeff Tharp ( Tharpo ) and friends. Looking forward to next year's party already! Find many more photos on my Facebook !

Dallas Magic Club Meeting July 2017

Image
Just had a great time at this month's meeting of the Dallas Magic Club . In an effort to make the meetings as educational and fun as possible, we scheduled our own Dr. Mike Smith and Geoff "Doc" Grimes to present a mini-lecture on the works of magician, philosopher, teacher, and author Robert E. Neale, whose writings, though virtually unknown to most magicians, have been a major influence on some of the greatest performers in the business. That's me on the far left at Vernon's Pub after the meeting, enjoying drinks and good conversation with friends from left to right after me, Cole Cyres, Mike Squires, Diamond Jim Tyler, Dal Sanders, Cinde Sanders, and Ian Richards, some of the top magicians in the Dallas area. Dallas Magic Club Officer Installation

Image
This has been an awesome week for magic in Dallas! The Dallas Magic Club just hosted its annual officer installation banquet and magic show at Brookhaven Country Club, and after being a member of the Club for over eighteen years, I have finally been elected as the Club's new Vice-President! This is a huge responsibility for me, since I will serve as the Club's program director, being in charge of the content of the monthly meetings, among many other duties. Pictured are the new officers from left to right, President Joey Byers, Vice-President Daryl Howard, International Brotherhood of Magicians President Oscar Munoz who made a special trip to Dallas to swear us in, Treasurer and Wylie Mayor Eric Hogue, and Secretary Dr. Mike Blum. Afterward, we enjoyed a hilarious fun-filled magic show by Oscar Muñoz , winner of the prestigious IBM Gold Cups award. I was also able to attend a lecture by Oscar before the banquet, and learned some really cool coin magic, as well as some e...

Lawrence Hass Farewell Party

Image
W. . .O . . .O . . .O . . .W!! I have just had the most magical weekend ever! First, I was invited to perform my magic at a farewell party for one of my own mentors, Dr. Lawrence Hass, associate dean of the McBride Magic School in Vegas, who is moving out of the Dallas area to Tennessee. (That's him in the first photo opening the show with some of his favorite rope magic.) As if that wasn't an honor enough, I got to share the stage with another of my mentors, Eugene Burger, considered as one of the top ten best magicians in the WORLD, who closed the show with his signature piece, the famous Gypsy Thread, a true masterpiece of magic. The next day, Eugene hosted a lecture on the subject of improving our performance of magic, and I had the privilege of attending and helping out on stage. A truly awesome, magical weekend! See even more shots of the fun on my Facebook Page !

Kieron Johnson Lecture

Image
I have just experienced one of the most unusual, bizarre magic lectures of all time. This is Kieron Johnson, a professional magician from the UK, on his very first lecture tour in America, teaching us some of his favorite magic effects, including producing HOT COFFEE from a sealed soda can, burning a hole through a deck of cards to find the location of a signed card, and my personal favorite, producing a freely chosen, signed playing card in a solid block of ice! But, wait! There's more! After the lecture, I got invited out to dinner with Kieron and a few friends, where he demonstrated his ability to swallow a coin, then regurgitate it back up heads or tails, your choice! Of course, our dining experience would not have been complete without a further demonstration of his ability to swallow the coin, then snort it out his nose, with the help of a pair of pliers that he conveniently carries with him. You can see even more images from this fantastic event on my Facebook Pag...

Shoot Ogawa Lecture

Image
I just attended an awesome magic lecture by famous Japanese magician Shoot Ogawa, who visited the Dallas Magic Club to share some of his favorite secrets. I especially appreciated his version of the Chinese Linking Rings, which he calls "The Ninja Rings". He is one of the few magicians that can perform the classic linking ring trick with an audience volunteer holding the rings! If you know how it works, you can appreciate how amazing that is. If anyone is interested, we have another great lecture coming up on Sunday, November 1. Professor Lawrence Hass, associate dean of the McBride School of Magic in Las Vegas will be lecturing and releasing his new book Inspirations. E-mail me if you want more details.

Axel Hecklau Lecture

Image
Just attended a fantastic magic lecture here in Dallas by an old friend,  Axel Hecklau , a magician from Germany best known for "Newsflash", his instant torn and restored newspaper trick that he shared with us, along with many other amazing effects. My favorite was his "Knife Through Solid Spoon", pictured here. We also learned a really cool way to make a paper rose to give out as a gift. If you are interested in getting on the invitation list for upcoming lectures,  e-mail me , and I will pass your request along to the Dallas Magic Club.

Summer Splash Party

Image
I've just attended one of the most awesome parties ever, the annual Summer Splash party, hosted by local Dallas magician Dal Sanders and his wife Cinde. Professional entertainers and their families and friends come from all over the country to attend this party. That's me with fellow magician Daryl Sprout and his "lovely assistants" Penny the corn snake and Capone the lizard that appear with him in his Snake Encounters magic show. We also had fire jugglers that entertained us after dark, and I got to entertain guests with my walk-around magic. Thanks to Dal and Cinde for another successful party!

Dallas Magic Clubs Annual Banquet & Award Ceremony

Image
I've just attended the Dallas Magic Club annual banquet and awards ceremony. That's me visiting with professional entertainer and party planner Cinde Sanders, who was responsible for my successful 60th birthday party. Dallas magician Trigg Watson won the trophy for "Best Magician in Dallas", shown here in the center being presented the award by Club President Frank Seltzer on the left, and two-time award-winning world champion Canadian magician Shawn Farquhar on the right. After dinner and the ceremony, Shawn treated us to an absolutely awesome magic show, and even agreed to stay in Dallas one more night to host a magic lecture the following evening. Everyone in attendance had a wonderful time, and the lecture was one of the most educational and entertaining ones that I have ever attended. I just had to get a photo taken of me with Shawn after the lecture; he really is one of the world's greatest magicians, and a great guy off stage, too. Thanks to the Dallas Mag...

Best Magician In Dallas

Image
The Dallas Magic Club just held our annual contest for Best Magician in Dallas, and, of course, I entered the competition again. I can't believe that it has been a whole year since the last contest! The competition was even more fierce than last year, and everyone gave an outstanding performance. The bad news is, we won't know who won until they announce the winner at the Club banquet in MAY! I don't know if I can sit on all those pins and needles until then, but I will keep everyone posted as soon as I know the results.

Eric Jones Presentation

Image
The Dallas Magic Club just hosted another great magic lecture by master sleight-of-hand artist Eric Jones this past Sunday. Eric is not only a talented magician, but he is one of the best teachers on the subject of magic that I've seen. It was a very entertaining and educational event. If you are interested in magic and would like to attend future magic lectures in the Dallas area, drop me an e-mail and I will get you on the list!
